Management
Sequoia’s team possesses depth of experience in managing successful scientific and business operations.
The versatile R&D team is anchored by a multidisciplinary core of scientists consisting of chemists, biochemists, structural biologists, molecular biologists, and virologists familiar with the novel technologies and ideas on which Sequoia was founded.
Sergei V. Gulnik, Ph.D.
Sergei Gulnik, Vice President, Biochemistry, received M.Sc. in Chemistry and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Moscow State University. He directed the Biochemistry Laboratory at Structural Biochemistry Program at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick, Maryland. Dr. Gulnik has extensive experience directly leading research activities on protein expression, purification, refolding, crystallization, as well as biochemical and kinetic characterization of biologically active molecules and assay development using conventional and high throughput format. The biochemical fitness assay pioneered by Dr. Gulnik and colleagues was instrumental in discovery of the first resistance-repellent HIV protease inhibitor, currently in clinical trials at Tibotec Virco. His work in drug resistance and aspartyl protease biochemistry is internationally respected. Dr Gulnik has published more than 55 papers in the fields of Biochemistry and Protein Science. He is a co-inventor on several patents, including the viral fitness assay as a method for treatment of multidrug resistant HIV infections. Dr. Gulnik also served as Head of Biochemistry and Director of Research at Tibotec, Inc., and was a Project Leader for two global, multidisciplinary drug discovery projects.
